When the world is this big, it seems a shame to just visit the same places over and over again. There are so many places to discover off the beaten path which haven’t yet been trampled by tourism. There really is something amazing about going somewhere that is more of a hidden gem and feel as though you are part of a secret club. Here are six offbeat holiday adventures to consider for your next trip.
An African safari is a once in a lifetime adventure, and one that everyone should experience at least once! Explore the ecosystem via a walking safari, or enjoy a ride on a jeep while aiming to spot all of the Big Five (elephant, lion, leopard, rhino and Cape buffalo). Be sure to spend some time learning about the local areas from those who live there, and heading out to natural phenomena such as Victoria Falls – the greatest curtain of falling water in the world.
If you love mountains, there is nowhere better than Kyrgyzstan, which has over 90% mountains just asking to be trekked and explored. Go on a horse trek around the countryside, taste the wares at the Osh Jayma Bazaar and, of course, you have to stay in a yurt to really get the full experience! This is a fantastic adventure for getting back to basics.
Slovenia is often called the “New Zealand of Europe” thanks to the stunning mountains and rivers, as well as the small population. If you fancy a pamper, the salt-pan mud wraps are locally sourced and said to be amazing for your skin, as well as any pains. Lake Bled is, of course, a must-see, as one of the most beautiful bodies of water, so be sure to take a boat across the lake to Chapel Island to really enjoy it.
You might be tempted to head to Peru or Argentina rather than Bolivia, but it really is a beautiful place to visit thanks to the breathtaking landscapes mixing green lakes, artistic rock formations, and the unbelievable salt flats. For the walkers there is plenty to see, do and explore, but even those who enjoy a tipple can enjoy the unique wine scene
One of the best reasons to visit Bangladesh is the people – they are some of the friendliest you will ever meet, as the Bengali culture is big on how you treat your guests. Immerse yourself in the local art and culture by timing your trip with a festival (after all, it’s called the Land of Festivals!), and see a sunset over Cox’s Bazar – the longest natural sea beach in the world. Bangladesh is also home to some of the yummiest food known to man, so you’d be mad to miss out on it.
For a lot of people, the first thing that springs to mind when they think of Haiti is the huge earthquake that hit in 2010 and left devastation in its path. However, there is so much more to this island that makes it really worth a visit. The white-sand beaches are stunning and the networks of caves are amazing to explore. There are waterfalls and hilltop fortresses and so many other amazing areas to check out. Be sure to learn about voodoo while you are there! Plus, tourism helps the country to rebuild, so you know you’re doing good at the same time.
So, instead of choosing Paris or Rome, why not give one of these hidden gems a try instead and see how it feels to take the road less traveled. What’s your favorite offbeat holiday adventure? Let us know in the comments.
